happy halloween. well we didnt really have halloween here. but i did have a great weekend. saturday hayat and i went to torino. and today james and hayat and i went to the festival of the cows a few towns away in settimo vittone. every year they have a festival when the cows come down off the mountain for the winter. the cows come down and are paraded through the streets of the town. they are all dressed up–the cows, not the townspeople, well the italian are always dressed up. anyhow the cows were wearing ribbons and flowers and big giant cowbells with really ornately decorated collars. they also had a marching band and the sheep and goats made the rounds too. many crafty things going on and for sale and regional foods and wine. we tried these corn flour crepe-type things. james had his filled with cheese and hayat and i had ours filled with nutella. they also had roasted chestnuts which are the autumn thing here. the chestnuts fall from the trees and are harvested now and roasted up in barrel fires. it was a warm day and just a tiny bit of chilliness tonight. good festival weather.
yesterday in torino hayat and i did some window shopping and went to the national museum of cinema. the place is huge, we didnt get through the whole museum. we saw all sorts of old photo equipment and the origins of moving images. and silly stuff like spike from the gremblins. after we tired ourselves out we went to the movie theatre at the bottom of the museum where you could lie in these chaise lounge chairs with speakers build into the chair by your head and chill out watching a movie…many many people where sleeping. there was a long line to get into the museum and it seemed like it was mostly italians visiting, it is a holiday weekend here.
after the museum hayat and i were going to get some dinner but ended up finding a great art supply store! happiness! so we got some goodies and then found dinner. and went home happy.
for the last few days i could not post anything. but james to the rescue. he fixed my blog up and now the links to the old posts work too. thursday the first year IDII students presented their first big projects. james worked with our friend nick and their project came out great. their assignment was based on the turing machine. after the presentations james and i had a party at our apartment. (since we cancelled james birthday party because he was sick on his birthday) it was fun. we eventually got some booties on the dance floor. thats all we wanted was a dance party. we also borrowed a dvd projector and projected some break dancing movies on one of the walls for dancing inspiration. bunches of people came and drank and danced and talked and sat and then went home.
the great john peel has passed away. john peel died monday of a heart attack he was 65 years old. i am saddened. he was one of my music heroes. he gave almost every single one of my favorite bands their first exposure. he was with bbc radio 1 since the day they started the station. and was their longest running dj. he pioneered punk rock music with his live peel sessions on radio one. he had sessions with the smiths, cocteau twins, echo & the bunnymen, siouxsie & the banshees, the damned, joy division, new order, the cure, the jesus & mary chain, OMD, blur, the wedding present, the jam, gang of four, madness, the pet shop boys, billy brag, clan of xymox, inspiral carpets, happy mondays, pulp, the white stripes, nico. the fall preformed for john peel 24 times! and he gave david bowie and the sex pistols a name in britain. he also recorded punk rockers like the UK subs, stiff little fingers, wire, the buzzcocks. and the undertones: the undertones “teenage kicks” was his favorite single, he actually played it two times in a row on the air, stating “it doesnt get better than this.” radio 1 played “teenage kicks” after they announced his death on the air monday.
many people in the music biz have reacted to the news of john peels death and there all sorts of articles if you want to read more.
